Writing Challenge-Day #5

What are five places you would like to visit.

I think I will focus only on places I haven't yet visited. Having said that, I am by no means a world traveler, but there are some places that I have visited that I would like to return to. Hence, all five of these will be novel visits.

1. Omaha and Juno beach. I have a deep interest in World War 2 history and these two beaches were pivotal in the war. Omaha as it was the main focus of the US invasion and Juno as it was key in the Canadian campaign. I would stand in awe of the lives lost and blood spilled on those beaches so many years ago. Actually, I think it wouldn't be limited to these two beaches but the whole invasion area that I would like to visit.

2. Everest. I mean, really, who wouldn't want to stand at the top of the world? I realize that of this list, this location will be the least likely for me to visit. I enjoy the cold (I live in Canada) but mountaineering at high altitude and in the freezing cold is not high on my list. I would like to attempt mountaineering at some point, but as the days and years move onward, it seems less and less likely to happen.

3. New Zealand. I'm not sure exactly why I feel compelled to visit this Island Paradise. Maybe it isn't even a paradise. The pictures sure look nice and The Lord of the Rings movies were filmed there so it can't be all that bad. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to go to New Zealand and visit, or even live. Who knows, perhaps one day.

4. Egypt. The history and the magnificent pyramids, sphinx and statues are absolutely fascinating. To think that all of that engineering and construction was accomplished with rudimentary tools and technology (at least as far as we understand) is amazing to me and I would love to study them up close.

5. Machu Picchu in Peru. I'm fascinated in ancient South American civilizations and the secrets they hold. I would love to climb to Machu Picchu and see the city touched by the clouds.

That's about it. Looking at my list, history is a factor that would play into my travels. I love to read and history is a topic I don't seem to get enough of. The actual lives of millions were played out over centuries in these locations and for some of them, all we have left are ruins of cities, statues or markers. I always wonder what they thought as they looked to the future. Could they possible imagine that there would be so many people who would look to the past with wonderment at who came before them?

How about you? Where would you visit if you could? Feel free to comment in the comment section below.
