Writing Challenge-Day #12

Write about five blessings in your life.

Only five? Where does one start or finish? Like the other lists I have done, there is no particular order to these. And perhaps I will use one or two that I haven't used before.

1. Family-This one seems obvious, but the less obvious part is how they are a blessing to me. Each member of my immediate and extended family has or does play a role in my life and who I am. I find that as a parent, I use skills I saw being used when I was a kid. I rely often on my wife for her higher level of wisdom and skill. I learn from my kids through feedback, sometimes instantaneous. (As in what foods the little guy isn't interested in). My life is shaped by my experiences, and many of my most meaningful experiences have been with my family.

2. My faith or belief system. Much of what I do on a daily basis, including the way I approach relationships at home, work or in the community is based on my belief system. A common phrase is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This, among others guides me constantly. I also view life in a positive light, realizing that although I don't know everything, I believe that we (collectively) are inherently good and are headed for better things. I don't at all discount the trials and suffering that goes on around me, but this inherent good we possess, also allows us to show compassion and kindness to others.

3. My senses. The blessing of the ability to engage with my environment on multiple levels is not lost on me. There is so much around me that I can appreciate via one sense or another makes me look forward to the next day (or night).

4. Friends and colleagues. This is similar to #1. The beauty of my life is composed of my relationships with everyone around me. I would argue that even the challenging or "negative" relationships will provide me with some level of personal growth and development.

5. My physical abilities. Like #3, I understand that I am tremendously blessed to be able to get around as I please, to be able to take care of myself and manage much of my own affairs as I see fit. There are aspects of my life that are out of my control, but for the most part, I can do for myself whatever I want. If I want to get up and go for a walk, no problem. I want to ride my bike, why not? If I want to fly a plane, perhaps not, but I can still dream.

Blessings come in obvious and less obvious forms. Sometimes we see them right away, and other times, we recognize them as we look back over our life.

A key for me is to always try to recognize and give thanks for blessings so I don't take things for granted. In fact, writing this post has helped me focus on the myriad of blessings I have in my life. Choosing only five was harder than I thought, but certainly put me in the right frame of mind.

How about you? What are blessings you have in your life?
